Mera - DC Bombshell

"Please, Kara, anything--just don't let them hurt my sailors!"

DC Bombshells

Made by: Setsuna Kou - Summer 2018

I really wanted to cosplay one of the DC Bombshells. Their aesthetic appeals to me. But, I had trouble picking a costume. I've cosplayed Batgirl and Zatanna before, but I actually really don't like either of their designs in the Bombshell line. Harley's was okay, but it was *really* skimpy, and I'd need a wig. Not ideal. Eventually, I narrowed it down to three options: Black Canary, which was my first choice, but would need a wig, and might need some commissioned pieces, Mera, whose alternate design was my second choice, but I felt bad not doing her main outfit, and I don't know her very well, or Eloise Lane, who barely looked like a costume, but whose outfit I could definitely put together from store bought pieces. I was having a devil of a time making up my mind, so I created a poll on Facebook, and Mera won in almost a landslide.

I started reading DC Bombshells after the decision had been made, and I was *awfully* glad Mera had won. Black Canary isn't in the story at all (what the heck?), and while Eloise is pretty cool, Mera was just *so* me. An equal-opportunity flirt who honest to goodness cares about *everybody*. Plus I'd get to wear my red wig again, *plus* I'd get to carry around a giant trident. She was the perfect choice.

I really wanted this to turn out perfectly, and I remembered what an amazing job Setsuna Kou had done on my Sailor Mars - Black Mage costume, especially the staff, so I asked her if she would take this on for me. She did an *incredible* job, right down to the little sea shells on the shoes. And the costume really turned heads at the Javits Center that Friday--it had been a long time since my costume allowed me to cut lines and talk to creators, but Mera is a friggen *queen*. I am absolutely going to be looking for excuses to wear this again.
