Amalthea

The Last Unicorn

Made by: Avian Firefly - 2008

Appeared (on me): New York Comic Con 2017

Status: Retired

Like many other little girls growing up in the 1980s, this was one of my favorite movies. I can remember pretending to be unicorns with my friends in elementary school; I remember collecting unicorn stickers and assigning names and family relations to them based on our story. I might even still be able to remember some of them, if I saw the book. There were so many reasons that made this movie stand out, even if I couldn't articulate them as a child. The phenomenal animation quality, so different from the bright colors of Disney cartoons. The fact that the love story didn't end in "and they lived happily ever after." The fact that just because I hadn't seen a unicorn yet, didn't mean I never would. (Note: thirty years later...I still haven't given up hope.)

Avian Firefly made this costume for herself almost ten years ago, and wore it to Katsucon, and it was just gorgeous. Then she let Lady Terentia wear it literally the next day, because she is just that awesome. I've always wanted to wear it myself, in part because of my love for the character, and in part because I kind of want this costume to become The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Costume for OPIB. We just need Reinii to wear it now. Both Avi and I were surprised by how well it fits; all of us are close in size, but we obviously don't have the exact same measurements. I think it was just meant to be. That being said, this is one of the few costumes that somehow manages to make me look tan; I bought a longer wig than the one Avi and Teren used, and I think it's a brighter white than the original, silvery one, so it really picks up the faint olive undertones of my complexion. And, once again, I forgot until I had it on the morning of the convention that unstyled wigs come with bangs that are waaay too long, so once again I cut them in five minutes before I went out the door. So I'm glad I got to be Amalthea, but I don't think I did her justice.
