Hino Rei - white rose dress

"So in the midst of my usual work is this very un-Sailormoon-like illustration. You could say it's my experimental drawing."

Hino Rei - white rose dress from the fifth artbook

Sailor Moon

Appeared: Hino Rei

Status: Active

This costume has been in the works for a long time--looking through my LiveJournal, it looks like I got the link for the base dress in January of 2006. I know Usagi Seion and JenyBean bought about 90 white roses for us to share (30 each!) in the Garment District of Manhattan not long after that. At first, it took a while to get started, because this was originally meant to be part of a group project for Serene Crystalline JenyBean, but after that group kind of petered out, I decided I'd get started on it on my own. But it always took a back seat, because there were so many other costumes that needed to be done for current groups, you know? But I can remember working on this dress right after my mom got out of the hospital in the spring of 2007, and after I had finished sewing the roses onto the skirt of the dress that June. It took me another, oh, four years before I'd get around to sewing the roses onto the back of the dress, in part because I had the brilliant idea that I needed a snap to install on the back so that it would be tighter around my waist, and once I no longer worked near the Garment District, I couldn't find snaps anywhere. Finally, with David Ng gently pushing me to finish this dress the entire time, it was completed in April of 2011.

Many thanks to Avian Firefly for sharing the link for the same base dress that she used for her White Rose group from Otakon 2005--and for introducing me to a new website, I have shopped from Discount Dance Supply many times since. Thanks to Usagi Seion and JenyBean for finding the perfect fabric white roses as well. While I doubt I'd wear this costume again unless another cosplay group was organized, I might want to try it on for a few more pictures still--I was very unhappy with the bra I bought to go with this dress (serves me right for shopping online and not trying things on), and now that I know just HOW clingy the fabric of the dress is, I'd like to try it on again when I'm a good eight pounds or more thinner. But thanks to David Ng I was able to cross yet another of Rei's artbook outfits off of my list.
