Sailor Mars - Black Mage

"I always viewed Mars as the sexiest of the sailor scouts with those long legs of hers so I triiiieeeed to make her into a sexy black mage, but mannn! I suck at drawing sex appeal."

Full disclosure, this is not a costume I would have done on my own. But in March of 2017 I went to the Silver Millennium Masquerade Ball, and joined the Facebook group for that. A few weeks later, one of the attendees, Elena, posted in the group that she'd like to organize a Sailor Moon cosplay group for this year's New York Comic Con. Well, I go to New York Comic Con every year, and I try to do one anime costume per weekend, why not do it with a group of people? And it turned out a *lot* of people from the ball were interested--including the beautiful Makoto who had been at my table at the ball. In fact, it turned out we had the perfect number of people for a full group of the main characters. So we made our own little Facebook group--Sailor Moon Cosplay @ NYCC.

I have to say, I may just be lucky, but once again I wound up meeting a group of people who were all sweet, kind, fair, and passionate. After tickets went on sale in April, we were able to figure out which day we would all be able to attend, which turned out to be Sunday. A variety of costume themes were suggested, and we voted, and went with what got the most votes--in this case, the Final Fantasy mash up. Then, we all listed our top three characters we'd like to cosplay, and Elena tallied all of our lists and made sure everyone got either their first or second choice. (No one else listed Mars as her first choice, so she was all mine!) The rest of the year, everyone shared with the group their progress pics, and notes, or just general awesome Sailor Moon stuff, or cosplay stuff, or even what was just going on with their lives.

Since, of course, I don't sew (thankfully, I wasn't the only one--our group was a mix of homemade and commissioned costumes), I decided to go back to Setsuna Kou for this, as she had made me the dress for the ball, which had led to this group even happening. She did an amazing job--all of the colors photographed so vibrantly, and she added a bit of holographic shimmer virtually everywhere she could. You wouldn't believe the amount of details she thought to include--right down to the front of the heel of my shoe being painted with red glitter. Simply amazing.
